Prof. Mahmut AYDIN is the chancellor of Samsun University. He was born in the district of 19 Mayıs in Samsun in 1968 and graduated from the Theology faculty of Ondokuz Mayıs University in 1990. İn 1991 he became a research assistant in the department of History of Religions in the faculty of Theology at Ondokuz Mayıs University and completed his masters degree in 1993 with a thesis titled ‘the birth and development of law in christianity’ Prof. AYDIN was sent to England in May. 1994 by Ondokuz Mayıs University to study for a Phd in the the Theology faculty of Birmingham University. Here, at the ‘Centre for Islamic Studies and Christian- Muslim Relations’ his Phd was completed in 1998 with a thesis titled ‘Modem Western Christian Theological Understandings of Muslims since the Second Vatican Council’. Upon completing his Phd. Prof. AYDIN was appointed in 1999 as an assistant Professor in the History of Religions branch of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Sciences in the Faculty of Theology at Ondokuz Mayıs University . He became an associate Professor in 2003 and a Professor in 2009.
Between 2008 and 2012 Prof. AYDIN served as the director of the Institute of social sciences and between 2012 and 2014 as Vice Chancellor at Ondokuz Mayıs University. During his doctoral studies he worked at the Papal Gregorian University and Papal Oriental Institute for 3 months contributing to research concerned with the perceptions of Islam and Muslims in the Vatican.
Prof. AYDIN has joined numerous international conferences as a guest speaker and has given lectures at Glasgow, Hamburg and Trento Universities, On the 6th of September, 2018 Prof. Mahmut AYDIN was appointed as the founding Chancellor of Samsun University by the President.
